Box Tops for Education
Thoreau Elementary will collect Box Tops for Education through September 22nd. Please send any box tops to school with your child.
Ms. Ayupan and Mr. Dolloff would like to thank all of the parents/guardians who were able to attend parent/teacher conferences yesterday. If you were unable to attend, please contact your child's teacher and reschedule for another day. We would like to visit with all parents.
Students have new spelling words to practice. These spelling words focus on words containing consonant blends. Please spend 5 - 10 minutes nightly practicing the words. Thank you!

This week we will start the stories "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" and "Wolf! Wolf!" These stories are fables and focus on the essential question "What can animals in stories teach us?" The story skill this week is identifying the characters, setting, and plot of the story. the phonics skill is short u and long u spelled o_e. The children are learning CVC (cut) and CVCe (cute) patterns. Please make sure your child is reading nightly for 20 minutes and completing the reading log by writing about what happened on the pages he/she read. Don't forget to sign the reading log. Thanks!!!
Second grade is working on the math chapter for measurement. The objectives for this unit are: The students will be able to measure objects in inches, feet, and yards by choosing the appropriate tool, such as a ruler or yardstick. They will compare customary lengths, use measurement to relate inches, feet, and yards, and use logical reasoning strategies to solve problems. They will use a centimeter ruler and a meter stick to measure objects, choose the appropriate metric tool to measure, use measurement to compare metric length and relate centimeters and meters. Students will use a number line to measure objects and measure lengths to generate data shown on a line plot. Students will be assigned homework every night. Please check their folder and have them complete and return the homework daily.
